Here's the agency bio a junior copywriter at Wieden+Kennedy wrote for new business presentations many years ago:
Hal Curtis / Creative Director
Hal has spent parts of four decades at Wieden+Kennedy Portland as the creative director for clients such as ESPN, Nike, and Coca-Cola. A native Texan, Hal's work has won every major award in the industry including seven Emmy nominations and three Emmy wins for best commercial of the year. Spots like Freestyle, Hackeysack, It's Mine, Move, Kid Tiger, The Morning After, and scores of others. The 50th anniversary issue of Ad Age's Creativity named Hal one of the 50 most influential creatives in the industry. In 2009, Adweek selected It's Mine as the Super Bowl spot of the decade. Hal has served on the One Club board of directors. He is married with two grown children and spends most of his time between Bend and Portland, Oregon.
A few years ago, I stepped away from day-to-day, big agency life and founded a virtual brand communications collective called bespoke. I still enjoy staying close to the work and the small number of clients we have keep me just the right kind of busy.
Currently, we are working with:
A few examples of the work we've produced to date are included in this archive. Bandwidth is limited, but if you have a project that's creatively interesting, let's talk: hal.bespoke.pdx@gmail.com
About this archive:
At some point during all my years in advertising, you'd think I'd have put together a portfolio. Or a reel. Or both. I never took the time to do it. Probably because I was busy doing super important advertising things and because I knew how time consuming it would be.
But I wanted a place where family and friends, and anybody else who might be interested could go and take a look at what I've been up to all these years. So I made a work archive. Although I wouldn't characterize it as a comprehensive one. There's a fair amount of work I produced early in my career that's just — gone — and a fair amount I would like to forget and chose not to include. That said, the site is a good look at what a career in advertising during the mass media age was like. Back when television was king. And people read magazines.
Special thanks to Sarah Bavier and Michael Frediani for helping me locate and get copies of work that in quite a few cases is well over a quarter of a century old and to Kelly Nowels at Pocketknife for building out the site. Oh, and thanks to that nice guy at the FedEx place on 23rd named Jason who knows how to operate their flatbed scanner.

One final thing, here are a few quotes about advertising that have stuck with me over the years because I found them to be true:
On Creativity:
“You’re at your most creative when you’re the most fucked.”
~ Dan Wieden, W+K founder
“The reward is in the process.”
~ Mark Fenske, former W+K creative director
On being a Creative Director:
“Your job isn’t to know the right answer. Your job is to make a decision.”
~ Jim Riswold, former W+K creative director
“Behind every great ad is a great client.”
~ Rob DeFlorio, longtime Nike advertising director
And I’ll offer up one more. It’s about craftsmanship in broadcast television:
